1. Short Drills
There are a lot of myths surrounding speed training, but one of the most detrimental ones is that you can’t change your speed. This is absolutely not true.
Your body contains two types of muscles, slow twitch and fast twitch. Slow twitch muscles help you with endurance, while fast twitch are classified as the reaction muscles.
Most of the time people exercise the first. The get better at running long distances and staying on the elliptical longer. However, they often forget about the other muscles.
The fast twitch muscles are the ones that help with your reactions and quick movements. You can improve them just like you can improve the slow twitch muscles, through exercise. This means you’ll need to participate in short and quick drills. Sprints and power jumps are good examples of speed drills.
2. Focus on Reactions
The more you are able to isolate and exercise these muscles the faster you’ll become. A good technique is to focus on your reactions.
Don’t believe the idea that if you have a slow reaction time that’s just how things are. You can teach your body how to react faster. If you want to improve your speed, focusing on your reaction is a good place to start.
A few milliseconds head start might be all you need to win that race or score a point.
3. Change Directions & Speed Frequently
The last tip is to incorporate drills that involve frequent changes in both speed and direction.
