How to Push Past the Dreaded Weight Loss Plateau

Have you been working out hard several times a week and sticking to a nutritious diet, and yet find yourself up against a weight loss plateau?

If you’ve been struggling with weight that won’t budge despite your hard work, take heart: most people come up against a plateau at some point or another in their weight loss journey.

Let’s take a look at some of the efforts you can make to bust through that plateau and push forward:

Make Adjustments to Your Caloric Intake

During your weight loss journey, your caloric intake needs to be adjusted periodically. The number of calories you once needed to stay fueled throughout the day may be more than you now need as you shrink in size.

Revise your body’s caloric requirements based on your height, weight, and activity level to make sure you’re not consuming more than you need. Nutrition coaching can help you determine what adjustments need to be made.

Shake Up Your Workout Routine

If your current workout routine isn’t working any longer, it may be time to shake things up. Instead of your usual 30-minute power walk on the treadmill, for example, consider throwing in some weightlifting or HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) workouts here and there.

Your body is good at adapting, so what helped you kick the weight to the curb before might need some tweaking now. Keep your body guessing and burning fat by incorporating varied workout routines.

Remember: Quality Counts

Many people think that weight loss is as simple as “calories in, calories out.” But if you’ve reached a weight loss plateau, you might want to take a look at the type of calories you’re consuming.

Instead of processed foods, opt for high-quality whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. Indulging in these items while staying within your caloric range will help you shed those last stubborn pounds.

Check Your Sleep Schedule

A lack of sleep can mess you up in more ways than one, including hindering your weight-loss efforts. Sleep deprivation is linked to an increase in cortisol levels.

Cortisol is a stress hormone that, when present, can lead to fat accumulation, particularly in the midsection. So if you’re dealing with extra weight that just won’t budge, try getting some extra shut-eye.

Speak With Your Doctor

Sometimes the struggle with weight is due to another medical condition that’s hindering your diet and exercise efforts. It might be a thyroid problem, PCOS, or any other number of health issues that make it difficult to lose weight no matter how hard you try.

Your doctor can diagnose these issues and make some suggestions on how to boost your metabolism to break through your weight loss plateau.
