Healthy vs Unhealthy Fruits: How to Include Fruit in a Balanced Diet

1. Eat Coconut in Moderation

Coconuts are in trend, thanks to their numerous health benefits. Coconut oil is great for the skin and hair and makes an ideal replacement for your standard cooking oil. However, you have to be careful to limit your intake.

They contain a surprising amount of fat, so don’t go overboard. 

2. Go For Berries

Berries are always a safe choice.

Raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, and cranberries are all packed with vitamins that will boost your health. They’re also much lower in sugar than many other fruits.

Blueberries are particularly healthy. They’re full of antioxidants, which bring a variety of health benefits. They fight the signs of aging, lower your blood pressure, maintain healthy brain function and even help to prevent some forms of cancer.

Add them to cereal, salads, and smoothies regularly to reap the benefits. 

3. Avoid High-Carb Fruits

If you’re on a low-carb diet, your fruit intake could be ruining it. This is because some fruits are higher in carbohydrates than you might think.

Bananas are the main culprit, with more than 90% of their total calories coming from carbs. Pears are another, with a deceptively high carb content.

Dried fruits like dates and raisins should be eaten in moderation. While it’s easy to mindlessly eat handfuls of these small fruits, they can quickly add up to an unhealthy amount.

4. Ditch the Super Sweet Fruits

Sweetness is one of the best things about fruit, but it’s also one of the most dangerous. 

Like any other type of food, it gets its sweetness from a high sugar content. While the sugar is natural, it doesn’t mean you can eat as much of it as you want. In high amounts, it can still do damage to your health.

That’s why you should avoid eating super sweet fruits, such as mango. 

5. Eat a Lot of Fiber

Fiber is essential for a healthy diet and fruit is an ideal source. However, some contain more than others.

Passionfruit, apples, plums, pineapples, peaches, lychees and grapefruit are all high-fiber fruits. Reach for these first to make sure you get your required daily intake.
